‘Fantastic Beasts’ kickoff event
The King County Library System will hold a kickoff event Sept. 1 to celebrate the fall season and a new program series featuring educational magic and wizardry, according to a media release. The celebration is for those 11 years and older and includes a sorting ceremony as well as wand matching. Attendees will be sorted into the proper house — Horned Serpent, Pukwudgie, Thunderbird or Wampus.
The “Fantastic Beasts” sequel is set to release Nov. 16 and throughout the month of November, kids and adults will be able to earn points toward winning the House Cup by participating and/or volunteering in different hands-on activities. The activities will be held at the Algona Pacific, Auburn, Black Diamond, Covington, Fairwood, Federal Way, Kent and Maple Valley libraries.
The Covington Library will host the kickoff event beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1.

Backpacks for foster children
Local Allstate agents — Francesca Moceri (Maple Valley), Michael Collins (Renton) and Kristian Landon-Suson (Renton) gave out 1,00 free backpacks filled with school supplies at the Pacific Science Center Saturday.
The backpacks were given to undeserved youth and foster children to help them prepare for the new school year.
Celebrate Newcastle Days
The city of Newcastle’s annual Newcastle Days festival is Sept. 7 and 8 at Lake Boren Park.
Saturday festivities kick off with the annual Parade in the Park beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Biz Fair coming end of September
Renton Technical College will host the 22nd annual Washington Small Business Fair (Biz Fair) from 8 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29.
According to a media release, this is the longest running free small business event in Washington run by local government and volunteers.
A resource center as well as business seminars will be available for attendees.
New to Biz Fair this year is a keynote speech by Co-CEO of Mud Bay, Lars Wulff.

National Day of Service is Sept. 8
The city of Renton will host its ninth annual Day of Service next Saturday, Sept. 8 from 9 to 11:30 a.m.
Volunteers will participate in service activities throughout the city is observance of the anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001.

Following the completion of volunteering on the projects, volunteers are invited to a celebration lunch from noon to 1 p.m. at Liberty Park.
