Renton wrestlers made their presence felt on the Tacoma Dome mats at the 3A Washington State Mat Classic Championships Feb. 19-20.

Liberty’s Hamilton Noel placed second at 145 pounds, Renton’s Aaron Garcia took third at 103 pounds and Lindbergh’s Isiah Corwin finished third at 160 pounds.

Those three highlighted the action, while a host of other Renton wrestlers competed.

As a team Liberty led the way for Renton, placing 16th with 39 points. The Patriots were buoyed by Noel, Jay Chakravarty and Chris Harlin, who all placed.

“I’m excited about how we finished as a team,” said Liberty head coach Manny Brown. “We ended up getting three placers and the guys did really well.”

It was a strong end to an outstanding season for the Patriots.

“Going in I expected we would be higher than usual as far as Liberty goes,” Brown said. “We had a lot of guys who wrestled throughout the year and peaked at the right time.”

The Patriots went 15-0 in the regular season despite starting off six wrestlers down due to Liberty’s long playoff run in football.

For Brown, in his fourth season as head coach, it was also emotional to see his first group of seniors (who started as freshmen his first year) finish their season.

“It was a fun season to go through,” he said. “It was good to see how the seniors peaked and improved throughout the years. It is going to be tough to say goodbye.”

Lindbergh finished 26th with 19 points at the state match. Renton finished 30th with 18 points. Hazen finished 46th with one point.
