Save energy as you set your clocks back

With the clocks turning back for the end of daylight saving time on Sunday, Nov. 6, the shorter days and colder weather can sometimes mean higher energy bills.

To help customers, Puget Sound Energy is offering several energy-saving tips for residents looking to keep their energy bills lower.

“We want our customers to know that the time change doesn’t have to mean turning up the heat on energy bills,” Mark Kammerer, PSE Energy Efficiency Expert said in a press release.

As we move our clocks back an hour, it’s also a good time to look at improving safety around your home. Consider using LEDs in your porch lights and in motion light sensors to illuminate your home when it gets darker earlier in the day.

Also: don’t forget to check on batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

Five ways to save energy at home:

  1. Swap out old, incandescent bulbs for new, energy-efficient LEDs, which use less energy and last much longer.
  2. Proper insulation is one of the best ways to save energy at home since it keeps your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Start by adding insulation in areas like the attic to prevent heating or cooling from getting through unseen leaks or seams.
  3. Change your showerhead to one that saves both water and energy. Using less water means reducing demands on water heaters, too.
  4. Consider replacing an old, energy-wasting fridge or clothes washer for an ENERGY STAR® certified appliance that could save you up to $200 a year.
  5. Schedule a free Home Energy Assessment from PSE to help identify energy upgrade opportunities that are uniquely tailored for your home.
