Renton woman killed in industrial accident at recycling company

A 25-year-old employee of Smurfit-Stone Recycling died April 7 after she was trapped under a large amount of plastic recycling in an industrial machine, according to the Renton Police Department.

The death of Sharon Silva was ruled accidental by the King County Medical Examiner’s Office. She was asphyxiated under the plastic debris.

The company is in the 700 block of Southwest 34th Street.

She was able to call for help, after the material came down a shoot. But efforts to save her by co-workers, police and firemen were unsuccessful. She died at the scene.

The Washington state Department of Labor and Industries is investigating.
