Renton wins Well City Award

For the second year in a row, the City of Renton has received a Well City Award from the Association of Washington Cities (AWC).

The award is based on meeting best-practice standards in employee health promotion. Through its commitment to health and a strong wellness program Renton Employees’ Health Plan Board of Trustees (the city’s employee benefits board) and the City of Renton’s Employee Wellness Committee (CREW) have provided opportunities for city employees to participate in wellness activities.

“We are committed to encouraging our employees to live healthy lifestyles and provide opportunities for everyone in our community to be healthy and active,” said Mayor Denis Law.

Highlights of the city’s wellness program include:

• Quit for Life tobacco cessation program launched in 2010 available to all employees and their spouse or domestic partner.

• Move More, a five-week physical activity program where staff earn points and rewards; more than 30 percent of the city’s workforce participated in 2010.

• Renton’s Wellness Fair, offering employees free flu shots, health screenings and information on various health topics.

• Brown Bag Lunch And Learn Sessions on many topics such as heart health, cancer prevention and detection, stress management, nutrition, exercise and active lifestyle and more.

A fitness room at City Hall, weekly yoga sessions offered at City Hall, and  classes at the Renton Community Center promoting health and exercise.

“Our efforts to promote wellness initiatives and enhance healthy activities in Renton’s workforce have reaped many benefits over the past few years, including a healthy work environment, a more productive workforce and reduced costs,” said Nancy Carlson, Human Resources and Risk Management Administrator.
