The Renton Farmers Market returns to the streets of downtown June 2, with a new focus on increasing access to healthy food for everyone.

The market runs from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesdays, June 2 to Sept. 29. It’s located the Piazza Park, 233 Burnett Ave. S.

Farmers Market Manager Carrie Olson has been working with Food $ense, a program that teaches those with limited incomes nutrition basics and smart buying strategies.

“We will be holding cooking demonstrations featuring fresh produce from the market from 4 p.m. -5 p.m. on most weeks,” Olson said via email. Food $ense has also planned two market tours this season, on June 9 and again on Aug. 4 from 3 p.m. -3:30 p.m.

The Renton Farmers Market will also start a new token program to accept Electronic Benefits Transfers (EBT) and Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) beneficiaries at the market for eligible foods, starting July 7.

All of the familiar favorites of the market will also be back, including flavorful fruits and vegetables, flowers, baked goods, meats, cheeses, Washington wine tasting and food demonstrations. There will be live entertainment from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Washington State University Master Gardeners from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and local community information booths.

Also back this year is the popular Kids’ Patch, with activities for kids, and Market West, located across Logan Avenue with more food, crafts and activities.

The Renton Farmers Market is managed by the City of Renton, with volunteer support from Piazza Renton.
