GLOW helps women make healthy choices

Valley Medical Center’s key event promoting women’s wellness is back; the GLOW first anniversary celebration is Sept. 22.

Held at ShoWare Center, 625 W. James Street in Kent, the event is 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and will entertain women of all ages with a sit-down dinner, prizes, a health and partner fair, live entertainment and gifts.

Valley CEO Rich Roodman and Marketing Director Liz Nolan spearheaded the event and saw a need in South King County for a women-focused program.

GLOW is designed to empower women to make healthy decisions for themselves and their loved ones, said Kim Blakeley, Valley spokesperson in an email.

Since the fall of 2010 the program’s membership has risen to 2,000.

Aside from their inaugural kick-off event last year, they’ve had bimonthly events such as an educational auto repair and safety workshop in partnership with Brotherton Cadillac, a tea focused on heart health, a spa day and most recently a self-defense and anti-bullying workshop at Kim’s Tai Kwon Do.

“Our members are from all ethnicities, ages and income levels,” said Blakeley. “Most of the women are from Renton and Kent, but we draw from all over South King County.”

Valley tracks members feedback on their interests and designs programs to fit them. So far all of their GLOW events have been filled to capacity, so Blakeley believes they are delivering what the members want.

Last year’s main speaker Julie Funt brought laughs and cheers from the crowd for her motivational speech. This year speaker Christine Cashen will provide high-energy entertainment and inspiration to women attending the event.

The musical guest is Kellee Bradley, who has opened for national artists like Chicago, John Mellencamp, Huey Lewis and the News, JoDee Messina, Basia, and the Steve Miller Band.

The event this year will again feature a Health & Partner Fair. The lineup includes VMC’s Breast Center and Birth Center, Cookie Lee Jewelry, Starbucks, Scentsy Wickless Candles, WOLF 100.7 and SPIRIT 105.3, Lindt Chocolate, Covington Creek Nursery, VMC’s Eye Clinic and Diabetes Education, Stella & Dot, Salon D’vine andPinnacle Wellness.

Tickets to the event are $20 and are available at www.valleymed.org/glowtickets or from the ShoWare Ticket Office open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.
