Book chronicling 100 years of Renton available for purchase

Called a “cherished possession” by one reader, “The Renton High Centennial Celebrating 100 Years: An Oral History 1911-2011” by Barbara Nilson is available for purchase.

The book is on sale at the Renton History Museum and at Renton High School’s student store for $25.

It took Nilson, a Renton resident, three years to compile the 224-page volume of more than 100 interviews.

She wanted to capture the memories of the school’s alumni and its history. In it she examines not only the well-known Renton pioneer families but lesser-known families as well.

Nilson studied countless school yearbooks as well as conducted interviews for her research, giving highlights from each decade.

She said the school has so many traditions and legacies, one being in sports and she could have written a whole book just on RHS athletes.

The book contains interview of and conducted by current RHS students as well.

“I’m very proud of it,” said Nilson.

The alumni seem to be happy with it as well, based on feedback she has received.

Nilson has received letters and emails from readers thank her for her book. They are amazed that she has covered 100 years so well.
