Just because the Hazen baseball team’s celebration of a Seamount title wasn’t traditional doesn’t mean the team didn’t enjoy it.
Hazen found out four days after completing its regular season that it had won its first Seamount title since 2003.
“We’re pretty happy about it,” said Hazen coach Gary Jacobs. “It’s exciting to know the hard work paid off.”
The Highlanders (13-6) finished their regular season April 30, trailing Lindbergh (13-5) for the league lead by a slim margin. The Seamount title came down to a make-up doubleheader between Lindbergh and Kennedy Catholic May 4. If Lindbergh won both games, it won the Seamount. Lose once or twice and things swing toward Hazen.
At practice that afternoon, Jacobs knew his team would be eagerly awaiting the results, so he made sure everyone shut off any electronics so the team could focus on preparing for the upcoming sub-district playoffs.
As soon as practice ended, the team huddled together to find results. All they could tell was that Lindbergh was down 7-4 in the second game of the doubleheader. So they went home, unaware of their final placement.
“Forty-five minutes later phones started ringing, Facebook blew up,” Jacobs said. “We had the best electronic celebration ever.”
The Highlanders fell twice in the SPSL/Seamount sub-district tournament May 7. They lose the first game 11-1 in a five-inning game against Enumclaw (17-2), then later in the evening 3-1 against Auburn Mountainview (12-9).
Jacobs said rain that canceled early non-league games set the Highlanders back for the playoffs, where they will face stiffer competition.
“The rain earlier in the year affected us because we had non-league games scheduled that would’ve helped us prepare for that caliber of opponent,” he said.
Zac Kolterman is batting .433 on the season and leads the team with 28 RBI. Jimmy Schmidt has 16 RBI and a .438 average. Travis Johnson has scored 18 runs with an average of .450. Jeff Beckman is hitting .432 with 17 runs. Julian Li leads the team with 22 runs.
Schmidt leads the team with 34 innings. He has four wins, 27 strikeouts and a 3.91 ERA. David Green also has four wins and an ERA of 1.87. Zac Kolterman has an ERA of 3.99 in 26.1 innings. Freshman Jake Kolterman has 40 strikeouts and a 2.26 ERA in 21.2 innings.
Hazen lost to Kelso 3-0 in the first round of the district tournament Tuesday. The Highlanders play either Capital or Camas Thursday evening in a loser-out game.
