After a frustrating loss to Kennedy on Monday when they could not seem to buy a goal, the Hazen Highlander soccer team on Wednesday unleashed an offensive torrent on Tyee to rebound with a 9-1 win over the Totems at Renton Memorial Stadium.
The two teams entered the game tied for second place in the Seamount League but Hazen made statement to take sole possession and move within one point of Kennedy.
Coach Ken Matthews played with his lineup Wednesday, moving players around to new positions and bringing in a new backup formation, that paid off in spades. Captain Reyes Garcia, for example was moved to the forward position and rewarded his coach with three goals and an assist.
Forward Victor Mogollon scored two goals of his own, his first of the season, while Drew Wilson had a goal and an assist and Jorman Gonzalez added a goal of his own. Midfielder Nick Smith had two assists in the win.
“I went with some changes in the lineup tonight,” Matthews said in an email. “I told the guys they made me look really smart.”
Matthews went on to say that he did not think the score reflected how good the Tyee team was, just that Hazen played their best game of the season.
The Highlanders are now 6-2-1 on the season and 5-1-1 in the Seamount. They play Lindbergh on Tuesday.
