Salvation Army’s annual fundraiser is May 15

Two former recipients of the Salvation Army’s generosity will entertain at this year’s “Need Knows No Season” fundraiser, May 15.

Preparations, ticket and sponsorship sales have already begun for the annual event that provides funds for a number of Renton Salvation Army programs.

This year’s benefit is called “Reaching for the Stars” and features a dinner with author Richard Lemieux and concert with Latin jazz-pop trumpeter David Longoria.

The dinner is at 5 p.m., followed by the concert at 7 p.m.

Lemieux will share experiences from his book, “Breakfast at Sally’s,” a memoir of his time spent homeless in the Kitsap Peninsula area.

He regularly attended the Bremerton Salvation Army’s community breakfast.

He has since established a relationship with the Northwest division of the Salvation Army and advocates for the organization and the homeless.

The Renton Community Supper was inspired by his story, according to Michaela McCormack with the corps.

Longoria also received support from the Salvation Army early in his music career. He received his first trumpet lessons at the Renton Salvation Army.

Now he is a successful music artist, having played with U2, Sting, Aretha Franklin and Cece Peniston.

Longoria has also received the All That Jazz Award from the American Society of Young Musicians in 2010.

His “Balia” concert will appear on PBS this fall. He is known for combining jazz, dance, latin and rhythmic pop.

Longoria continues to support the Salvation Army as an advocate for its Brass Music Programs.

The event is a fundraiser that supports the Renton Community Supper, BOOST, an after-school homework club, and free Brass Music lessons for children’s programs offered by the corps.

Funds also go to support the food bank and service center.

Tickets are a suggested donation of $40; for the concert only they are $25. For more information or to inquire about sponsorships, contact Capt. Chris Aird at 425-255-5974 or Chris.Aird@usw.salvationarmy.org.
