The Renton football team redefined ground and pound with its 45-10 against Bishop Blanchet Friday night.
The Indians (2-0) rushed for 524 yards and six touchdowns – and didn’t throw a single pass in the game.
“We just didn’t need to throw it,” said Renton coach Terry Metcalf. “Our running game is doing pretty good. But it’s not where I want it to be yet.”
Senior Travino Buckley was the star of the night. He rushed for 226 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries. Buckley now has six rushing touchdowns through two games this season.
Blanchet’s Peter Johnson scored on a seven-yard run in the second quarter to pull his team within seven points.
Renton’s Marcus Clinton took the ensuing kickoff back 66 yards for a touchdown. Robert Reeves then added a 63-yard touchdown rush on an end-around. After a Blanchet field goal, Renton led 27-10 at the half.
It was all Renton in the second half. Buckley scored on a 76-yard rush, Mar’que Fluker scored from 77 yards out and P.J. Benedictus scored from 86 yards out.
The Indians have allowed just 16 points total this season, thanks largely to a defense that is determined to impose its will.
“Our focus is on what we do and what we do dictates what they do,” Metcalf said. “If you play sond football at any level good things are going to happen for you.”
Renton has attempted just four passes through the first two games this season. Metcalf said the passing game is coming along, the Indians just haven’t had to rely on it yet.
“We’re working on it every day,” he said. “I’m sure as we get further down teams are going to scout us and we’re going to have to put the ball in the air.”
