The Renton girls basketball team clinched its first state berth since 1987 with a 46-44 win against Olympic Feb. 17.

“It’s history,” said Renton coach Tim White. “I’m very, very happy.”

The Indians (18-6) won their first Seamount title since 1987 and went undefeated in league play this season. Renton trailed 18-15 after the first quarter and struggled with turnovers in the second quarter. Olympic led 29-18 at the half.

Renton came out in the third quarter and turned things around, climbing to within five points heading into the fourth.

“I just laid it on the line,” White. “I told them we’ve only got 16 minutes to play and we weren’t playing like champions.”

Renton’s defense dominated the final period and held Olympic scoreless for nearly six straight minutes. During that time, the Indians tied the game 43-43, then took the lead seconds later and never relented.

Taylor Farris led the team with 19 points in the game. Priscilla Tuiasosopo added 11 points.

Renton later lost to Port Angeles 54-52, Feb. 18. Then the Indians beat Eatonville 60-37 Feb. 20, which earned them the No. 3 seed out of the West Central District 2A tournament heading into state.

The Indians take on W.F. West Friday at 4 p.m. at Tumwater High School in the regional round of the state tournament.

Lindbergh’s season came to an end with a 53-49 loss to Olympic Feb. 18.

The Eagles (8-13) trailed by six points after the first quarter, but went on a 15-9 run to tie the game at the half. Olympic pulled ahead by nine points in the third and Lindbergh couldn’t get back.
