Mystery balk helps to end Hazen’s season in districts | Baseball

The Hazen baseball team fell to Capital 4-3 in the West Central District tournament Friday and its season is over.

The Highlanders (13-7) won a Seamount title in the regular season, but struggled offensively in the playoffs. Hazen scored five runs in four playoff games.

Against Capital, Hazen seemed to turn that trend around, scoring three times in the first inning. Zac Kolterman, Jeff Beckman and Cody Moorhead all had RBI hits in the inning.

Capital answered with a single run in each of the first three innings. Then Hazen’s Jimmy Schmidt got on a roll, retiring 16 straight batters.

There was some controversy in the top of the seventh inning with the teams tied 3-3. Kolterman hit what would have been an RBI double, but after the play was completed, umpires brought all of the players back and called a balk on the pitcher, erasing the hit.

Capital scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning with a double that turned into a run on a throwing error from Hazen.
