Liberty, Hazen open with wins | Girls basketball

The Hazen girls basketball team got the season started on the right foot by beating Ingraham 57-29 in a non-league game Tuesday night. The Highlanders (1-0) got out to a quick start and led 10-0 as Ingraham struggled with Hazen's full-court press. Hazen led by as many as 16 in the first half and finished the half with a 29-18 lead. The Rams never got closer than seven points.

Senior Airashay Rogers scored 12 points in the first quarter and finished with 23. Rogers also had six steals, six assists, seven rebounds and three blocks.

Cecillee Fernandez added 15 points for Hazen. Jayvonya Stewart scored five and had four steals. Cameron Devereux scored five points and had eight rebounds.

LIBERTY

The Liberty girls basketball team beat Sumner 57-45 Tuesday in a non-league season opener.

The Patriots (1-0) led throughout after gaining an 18-8 advantage in the first quarter. Aspen Winegar had a big game, scoring 25 points, grabbing nine rebound and blocking three shots.

Sierra Carlson scored 11 points. Stephanie Yea had six steals and five assists to with three points.
