It was slow-going at first for the Hazen soccer team Friday in their match-up with the Renton, but the Highlanders found their groove in the second half, topping Renton 4-0 at Renton Memorial Stadium.
Hazen outshot Renton 24-4 in the game and gained 15 corner kicks to the Indians’ 1.
“The guys humor me when I say one of my corny soccer sayings,” Coach Ken Matthews said in an email. “Tonight the one that applies has to be ‘when you’re shooting at their goal, they aren’t shooting at yours.’”
But despite an early goal by Zach Quesnel off of an assist from Drew Wilson in the first half, Renton hung tough and kept the score at 1-0 through the first half.
At 22 minutes into the second half, Hazen broke through again, with Reyes Garcia taking an assist from Ethan Kem to make it 2-0.
Gracis then picked up two assists of his own, first to Robbie Schroeder and then returning the favor to Kem to make it 4-0.
Keeper Luis Rodriguez preserved his shutout with a bog save late in the game. He has five saves overall.
Hazen is now 4-2-1 overall and 4-1 in the Seamount. They play Kennedy Catholic at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Renton Memorial Stadium.
