Up nine points, mid-way through the fourth quarter, things finally looked to be turning around for the Lindbergh boys basketball team.

Then it happened again. Missed shots, turnovers at the worst times and clutch shooting by Highline’s Eric Turner doomed the Eagles.

Lindbergh fell to the Pirates 49-48 Wednesday night at Lindbergh High School.

The Eagles (2-9 overall, 1-9 Seamount) trailed much of the game until Isaiah Williams hit a shot to give Lindbergh a 29-27 lead with five minutes left in the third quarter.

Lindbergh ran out on a 7-0 run to start the fourth quarter and built a nine-point lead. But Highline’s Turner got hot and tied the game 43-43 with a three-point shot later in the quarter. Turner led all game scorers with 25 points.

Steals and layups by James Keum and Devin Bickham on consecutive possessions put the Eagles up again 47-45 with under two minutes left.

Lindbergh had chances to put the game out of reach, but couldn’t make enough free throws in the final minutes.

Highline’s Jaquae Ingraham made two free throws with 3.7 seconds left in the game to give the Pirates a 49-38 lead.

The buzzer sounded as Keum hoisted a shot from halfcourt that barely missed off the back of the rim.

The Pirates won 91-62 in the first matchup against Lindbergh (Dec. 9) with Turner scoring 40 points, so Wednesday’s loss is definitely an improvement. But the loss does deal a tough blow to any faint hopes Lindbergh had of crawling back into the playoff chase.

With six games left, the Eagles would have to overtake Evergreen (5-4 league record), Hazen (5-5) and Highline (5-5) to earn the Seamount’s final playoff spot.
