Seattle Seahawks defensive end Patrick Kerney has retired, the team announced Tuesday.

Kerney, 33, spent the past three seasons with Seattle after eight with the Atlanta Falcons. He signed a six-year, $39.5 million contract in 2007 as a free agent to join the Seahawks.

“Despite the desire to continue my career, I am retiring from professional football,” said Kerney in a release from the team. “The toll that has been taken on my body will no longer allow me to train, and hence, perform, at a level that is acceptable to me. It has been a privilege to work for two first-class organizations that are supported by passionate, inspirational fans. I cannot express enough gratitude to all who have supported me throughout my career.”

In 2007 he was a starter in the Pro Bowl after leading the NFC with 14.5 sacks. He also forced five fumbles and totaled 62 tackles.

He played in 22 games the past two seasons, dealing with injuries off and on. He garnered 10 sacks in the 22 games.
