WSDOT prepares for 2023 repair of Lind Avenue SW bridge

A truck had damaged the bridge in June 2022 when it collided with it.

In summer 2023, contractor crews will replace the severely-damaged northern span of the Lind Avenue SW bridge over southbound Interstate 405 in Renton.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, the Lind Avenue overpass will remain closed to vehicles until work is complete. The pedestrian walkways over the bridge will remain open until construction begins.

To replace this span, crews will need a weekend-long southbound I-405 closure to demolish the damaged section. Work will require single and double lane closures on I-405. Crews will also need approximately six to eight nighttime closures of southbound I-405.

According to WSDOT, the repair is needed following a June 13, 2022 incident, during which, a truck pulling a backhoe struck the Lind Avenue Southwest overpass over I-405, damaging five girders that support the bridge.

“We closed the four-lane bridge and engineers determined the supporting structures are compromised. The level and location of damage makes replacing the damaged girders difficult and not cost-effective. Engineers say the integrity of the structure is undermined without replacing the overpass,” WSDOT wrote of the project on their website.

So far, WSDOT says $1.6 million in emergency funding has been dedicated to the project, but they claim that more funding will be needed to complete the work.

The project is expected to be finished by Fall of 2023.
