SUSAN BRESSLER: New focus for column and even a food blog

Happy New Year!

I know my New Year’s best wishes are a little late in the month getting to you, but we were stuck under two feet of snow in Michigan. I went back wishing for snow and boy did I get it! It was pretty for a while; but after a week of shoveling, I’m happy to be back in Renton in the rain. (You really believe that don’t you? Well, the Renton part is true!)

It is hard for me to believe that I am at the one-year anniversary of my column. I am grateful to the readers who have followed me along this journey. I love it when you take time to write to me, stop me in the street with ideas and thank me for a restaurant suggestion. The business owners are also thankful that you take time to visit their business after reading about it here.

It is my intent to continue to make this column one in which I share good things. Because there is enough bad news out there, I would rather focus on the positive. Having said that, if something really riles me up, I may make an occasional exception, but that would be an exception.

Therefore, I am excited to report an evolution to my column this year. I’m going to be writing above and beyond business topics this year. I have done a little of this in the past, and your responses have always been positive, so we decided to make that a permanent change.

I’d like to feature people doing good things. A particular column might be about just one individual. You see them every day, someone making herculean efforts in our community, our churches, our nonprofits, our parks. I would like to hear about city workers, business owners, restaurateurs, PEOPLE, just going above and beyond to make life better for others.

I’m out and about town, but I’m only one person. I’m counting on all of you to let me know when you see good things happening. And, then I’ll follow up to tell everyone else. Or, if you have had a particularly good meal somewhere that you’d like share with others, let me know. I can’t eat them all but I can try (and my husband sincerely wants to help with this endeavor!)

Speaking of eating well, I’ll also be following another passion of mine this year. Cooking. I am working to develop a blog on the rentonreporter.com where we’ll talk about all things food related. I’ll share recipes, cooking tips, restaurant reviews, how to cook with those fabulous finds at the Farmers Market and we’ll chat about your successes (and misses) in the kitchen. It will be a little like the movie “Julie and Julia” but focused locally. I am very excited about 2010 and meeting new people doing great things. And bon appetit!
