Strike averted for now; Renton garbage to get picked up

A possible strike by garbage haulers who serve most of Renton was on hold today (Thursday) as Waste Management and Teamsters Local 174 were set to continue negotiations.

Earlier, Allied Waste, whose service area includes part of Benson Hill, reached a tentative agreement with Local 174.

Members of Local 174 on Sunday had authorized a strike, if necessary, in their contract talks with the two companies. The two contracts expired at midnight Wednesday.

Negotiations were scheduled to resume this afternoon.

According to a statement from Waste Management, the union indicated that all workers will report to work today, with services provided as usual.

“We are happy that talks are continuing and look forward to participating in a full day of bargaining focused on a deal,” said Jackie Lang, spokesperson for Waste Management.
