Renton administrator to become Federal Way Public Schools chief

Renton's Assistant Superintendent of Learning and Teaching Dr. Tammy Campbell has been selected as the new superintendent of Federal Way Public Schools.

Renton’s Assistant Superintendent of Learning and Teaching Dr. Tammy Campbell has been selected as the new superintendent of Federal Way Public Schools.

The Federal Way Public Schools Board of Directors voted at a special board meeting on March 31, to offer the position to Campbell.

“Dr. Campbell is the unanimous choice of our board because of her vision, her knowledge and her passion,” said School Board President Geoffery McAnalloy in a district press release.

Campbell began in the Renton School District in April 2013 and her work included supporting staff in “embracing and celebrating the rich diversity present in all of our schools and communities,” a district release stated. She worked with teachers, principals and students to ensure student success in the district.

Before that, she’s held positions at the University of Washington Center for Educational Leadership, Washington State University, Spokane Public Schools and Central Valley School District.

“I am so pleased that Dr. Tammy Campbell has reached one of her professional goals of becoming superintendent,” said Renton Schools Superintendent Dr. Merri Rieger. “She is a dear friend and colleague, and I look forward to working alongside her as we serve our students, staff, parents and communities.”

Federal Way’s former Superintendent Robert Neu resigned his position in April 2014 to take a position with Oklahoma City Public Schools. The interim superintendent, Sally McLean, has served in the position since May 2014.

“Federal Way Public Schools has a strong commitment to closing the achievement gap,” says Campbell. “I feel honored to join in the work of the district to ensure success for the students and families we serve.”

After spring break this week, Renton School District officials will review Campbell’s job description, begin to discuss a committee and start the process for internal and external candidates. Campbell will take over as the new superintendent July 1.
