Victim shot in chest in attempted carjacking on New Year’s Eve in Renton

An attempted carjacking and shooting on New Year’s Eve in Renton injured one person.

Security video captured footage of the Dec. 31 incident that occurred at approximately 4:06 a.m. in the parking lot of the Maplewood Park apartments in the 3800 block of NE 4th Street.

According to the department, two suspects ran at the victims’ vehicle from the parking lot across the street as the victims exited the parking lot. The two suspects attempted to open the vehicle’s door unsuccessfully prior to ordering the victims out at gunpoint.

The victims sped from the scene onto NE 4th Street, and the suspects opened fire. Bullets struck the back of the vehicle and hit an occupant in the vehicle, according to the department.

According to an email from Sandra Havlik, spokesperson for the Renton Police Department, the victim suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest and underarm area. At the time officers responded to the incident, first responders deemed the victim’s condition non-life threatening.

A police K9 track led officers through the apartment complex, east onto Northeast 3rd Court to Union Avenue Northeast. The dogs lost scent of the suspects on Union Avenue Northeast between the 200 and 400 blocks.

Renton police have determined the suspects’ descriptions based on video collected as well as witness and victim reports, according to the department.

The department described the two suspects in the incident as two juvenile boys, Black, and both armed with Glock-style firearms.

According to the department, one suspect wore dark/black clothing, a black ski mask and white/light tennis shoes, and one suspect wore blue pants, a black jacket, ski mask and Crocs.

Renton police have requested public assistance, specifically searching for surveillance footage of the incident and surrounding area between 3:30 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. on Dec. 31.
