POLICE BLOTTER: Argument turns violent over gas-station line

The following information was compiled from City of Renton police reports.

An argument over a line-up at a gas station turned violent on April 24.

The fight happened at the Safeway gas station on South Third Street around 8:30 p.m.

A man picked up a garbage can lid and threw it at the windshield of a woman’s vehicle after they exchanged heated words about the order of the gas station line-up.

Apparently, a woman had asked the man to pull forward so she could leave her pump, as she was finished pumping gas and he backed into the stall ahead of her. He responded by cussing at this woman. Another woman took offense to the man’s response and got into an intense argument with him.

The two got close enough to each other so the man spat in her face. The woman said she motioned to punch him but thought better of it. The man challenged the woman to fight and the passenger of her vehicle jumped out and pushed the man back. The man continued his tirade and then went for the garbage can lid. The impact caused spider cracks in the windshield.

He then sped off in his vehicle with his female passenger. The woman didn’t want to pursue any actions against the man for fear of retaliation. Safeway security was contacted and they told police they would follow-up with surveillance of the incident.

Police found the man barely able to move and communicate, lying on a bed surrounded by multiple beer bottle caps. The apartment was filthy and cluttered, police reported. There were large pieces of machinery in hallways, bedrooms and the living room. There were also huge deposits of bolts, washers, screws and tools scattered everywhere. The kitchen was in disarray. The man himself was unkempt.

Police talked to the man’s twin brother by phone who said his brother suffers from an illness and also from huffing inhalants.

Police saw that the bullet penetrated from the outside and struck a medical bed, built of steel and metal reinforcement, inside the room.

The bullet ricocheted from the undercarriage of the bed to a steel bar which stopped the bullet. Police found the bullet slug lying on the floor and collected it as evidence. They spoke with a tenant next door and asked if they heard any sounds of a shooting in the last two weeks.

The tenant replied, “I always hear shootings.” “There’s always gunfire around here.” The tenant could not specify an exact time or date.
