Park Avenue fire in Renton ruled an arson

A fire that destroyed a law office on Park Avenue is being investigated as an arson.

The day of the fire K-9 units identified an accelerant, which led to the investigation, said Stan Engler, deputy chief of safety and support services.

Investigators recovered surveillance footage that identified several individuals seen in the area shortly before the 911 call, he said.

The damage totaled $342,000, which includes the cost of a burned-out Lexus.

Right now investigators are trying to sort out whether the motivation for the fire was related to the businesses, Engler said.

“We were pursuing multiple leads that were pointing in different directions,” he said Wednesday. “We are hopeful that we will get some additional information shortly to narrow things down.”

Fire origin samples have been sent to Washington State Crime Lab.

The two-alarm fire broke out in the ally behind 135 Park Ave. N. at about 10 p.m. March 23, said Lisa Garvich, a Fire Department spokesperson. No one was hurt.

When firefighters arrived, they saw the car engulfed in flames and fire climbing up the side of the building, she said.
