No one injured in two-alarm apartment fire

The fire department was still working to get an accurate headcount on those affected, but Red Cross was headed to the scene to help the victims.

At least two apartments were damaged, but no one was injured Tuesday afternoon during a two-alarm fire at Sunset Pointe Apartments on Vuemont Place Northeast.

According to Deputy Chief Chad Michael, fire crews were dispatched to the building at 3:15 p.m. for reports of a fire and the first aid car arrived on scene four minutes later to see fire coming out of the window of apartment 103 and moving into 203. Both units were damaged by fire, smoke and water. a third unit may also be damaged.

Michael said the fire department was still working to get an accurate headcount on those affected, but Red Cross was headed to the scene to help the victims.

A neighbor named Gary Wright initially saw the smoke and as his wife called 911, Wright ran across the street from his apartment and charged into the building to see if anyone needed assistance.

Wright said he and his wife used to be building managers at an apartment complex and his thoughts at the time were “There’s a fire and there might be someone in there.”

He said that as he crossed the street, the window int he partment blew out and he could see the flames.

“I just went up the stairs and kicked the door in, “ he said, adding that the apartment was empty when he arrived.

Wright was treated at the scene for minor smoke inhalation and was released.

Michael said that while the department appreciates it when neighbors show compassion toward other like this, but urged others to be careful and not put themselves in harm’s way.
