The league-leading Lindbergh Eagles scored three goals in the final 16 minutes of play Tuesday night to complete a remarkable comeback over second-place Hazen and keep their perfect season in tact.

Hazen went out to an early lead on a first-half goal by Ethan Kem off an assist from Zach Quesnel. The teams battled back and forth through the rain for the remainder of the half and went to the break with Hazen still up 1-0.

Then, 17 minutes into the second half, Kem scored again, this one off an assist by Arturo Munoz to make it 2-0.

The game stayed that way until the 75th minute when Taylor Rin put a ball into the back of the net to start the comeback. With time continuing to tick down, Joel Ramos got the ball in the 83rd minute and put one past the Highlander keeper to tie the game at 2 apiece.

Then, in the 89th minute a penalty was called and Lindbergh’s DJ Fox, who was injured in the first half but returned to play as time ran down, lofted a free kick over the goalie’s head from the 40-yard marker to give the Eagles the win on the last play of the game.

“We battled back from 2-nil, we never gave up, that’s all I can ask from my boys. It feel amazing,”  Lindbergh Coach Ryan Johnson said on the team’s official Twitter feed.

Hazen Coach Ken Matthews said his team was disappointed in the loss, but credited Lindbergh on their comeback and their season thus far.

“Not much you can other than congratulations to the Eagles,” Matthews said in an email. “They’re saying this is their year to win state and the comeback tonight sure makes them look like they’re never out of the running.”

Lindbergh is now a perfect 10-0 on the season and 8-0 in the Seamount League.  They play Renton today, Friday and Evergreen on April 19, both at Renton Memorial Stadium.

The loss breaks Hazen’s winning streak, which reached six with a 4-0 win over Tyee on April 6. Kem had two goals and an assist in that game.

Hazen falls to 6-3-1 overall and 6-2-0 in the Seamount.
