Long-time pastor Kirby Unti named RTC’s new trustee

Long-time pastor Kirby Unti was named Renton Technical College’s new trustee Wednesday.

Unti is known for his community service and social work through St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church.

“He has a real dedication to the community college system,” said Kim Tanaka, executive analyst for state boards and commissions. “He has a lot of community support.”

Unti fills the position of former trustee Frank Irigon, who resigned in August.

The timely nomination was made Wednesday, the same day trustee Rich Zwicker submitted his resignation from the board.

Within the next few weeks, the Board of Trustees is expected to vote on whether to offer its interim president Steve Hanson the permanent position.

The board will now have four of its five positions filled for the vote. However, a date for the vote has not been set.

The governor’s office took its time in selecting Unti.

“I wanted to have a conversation with him and a couple of the other candidates,” Tanaka said. “We take all of our appointments very seriously.”

Current trustee Ira Sengupta was also reappointed to her position this week.
