Leader in Latino community dies

Ricardo Mario Aguirre of Renton, a Chicano/Latino social activist, star Husky football player and coach and successful business owner in the insurance industry died last Friday.

Mr. Aguirre, born in 1937 in San Ysidro, Calif. He used his athletic prowess in high school and junior college to get recruited by Husky coach Jim Owens that earned him two Rose Bowl rings as a starter in the famous 1960-61 Rose Bowl victories over Wisconsin and Minnesota and was the first Latino ever to play Husky football.

After college Mr. Aguirre coached football at the University of Hawaii for several years then returned to Seattle and established his own insurance company.

In the late 1960s he became involved in the farmworker struggles and the Chicano movement in the Pacific Northwest. He was a founding member of El Centro de la Raza in 1972.

Survivors include his wife Marlinda; children Julia Maria, Deborah Ana and Ricardo Jesus, and four grandchildren.

A memorial services was Thursday.
