King County residents targeted by jury duty scams

Residents are getting calls from scammers claiming to be King County deputies.

King County residents have been impacted by a convincing phone scam in recent weeks.

According to Sergeant Cindi West of the King County Sheriff’s Office, residents are getting calls from scammers claiming to be King County deputies, informing the victims they have failed to show up for jury duty.

The scammers then demand the victim pay a fee or go to jail. They request a credit card number over the phone or even demand the caller go to a store to purchase a gift card and then read the number over the phone.

“The Sheriff’s Office would NEVER call you about a warrant and ask you to pay over the phone,” West wrote in a press release. “The scammers are very convincing but, DO NOT FALL FOR IT! Do not pay anyone over the phone for an alleged warrant for failing to report for jury duty.”

The easiest way to get rid of the callers is simply to hang up and then report it to your local legal authority.
