Blood supply reaching emergency level because of snow, ice

The heavy snows and icy weather are keeping donors away from the Puget Sound Blood Center, with Western Washington’s blood supply reaching an emergency level within a matter of days, officials say.

In the past two days, the Puget Sound Blood Center has canceled more than 15 blood drives, lost more than 1,000 blood donations and lost more than 50 platelet donations, according to Michael Young, a blood center spokesman.

“With more inclement weather forecast, we can expect to lose an additional 500 donations over the next three days,” Young said in a press release Friday. “And with the holidays, the next two weeks mean approximately 25 percent fewer donors than we would typically expect.”

It takes more than 900 donor registrations every day to maintain an operational blood supply in Western Washington, Young said.

There are 11 donor centers. To schedule an appointment, call 1-800-398-7888. Walk-ins are also welcome. Visit www.psbc.org for donation center hours of operation and driving directions.

The closest center is the Tukwila Center, 130 Andover Park E., Tukwila, 206-241-6300.
