Benefit in Renton Saturday at Harambee to aid Haitian quake victims

A benefit designed to help the victims of this week’s devastating earthquake in Haiti is planned for this Saturday (Jan. 16) at Harambee in downtown Renton.

The benefit is 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Harambee, 316 S. Third St.

There is a cover charge of $7, plus there will be baskets where donations can be made inside, said to Susan West with Child United. Some proceeds from food and beverage sales also will benefit the victims, she said.

The event is sponsored by the Seattle-based non-profit Child United and Browngroove Entertainment. It will feature local performers, including Souldefy and Slide Tactics.

The benefit also will aid the ongoing efforts of Child United to help displaced children in the Philippines.

Child United is a local grassroots organization that started in May 2007. Founder Christine Umayam traveled to the Philippines in 2006 and witnessed the devastation in Third World countries. Since then, the organization has helped thousands of disaster victims, supplied educational books to rural schools and sponsored children through high school.
