A cane-swinging, knife-wielding fight on Tobin Avenue | POLICE BLOTTER

The 71-year-old told officers the transient had threatened him and the fight ensured. At one point the transient threw pebbles at him, then a large rock, which hit him in the head. The small rocks also struck a nearby car.

The following information was compiled from Renton Police Department case reports.

A 71-year-old man swung his two canes at a knife-wielding 25-year-old man in a fight March 9 on Tobin Avenue South.

But witnesses say the 71-year-old was the aggressor, who initially swung the eight-inch kitchen knife at the man before dropping it.

The two men were swinging their weapons at each other as an officer arrived at about 5 p.m.

The initial officer pulled a service weapon but holstered it after the 25-year-old agreed to drop the knife. He had picked it up after the elderly man dropped it.

The 71-year-old told officers the transient had threatened him and the fight ensured. At one point the transient threw pebbles at him, then a large rock, which hit him in the head. The small rocks also struck a nearby car.

Witness told officers the elderly man had “blindsided” the young man.

The elderly man was taken to Harborview for treatment of his head wound. The younger man was taken to Valley Medical Center for a mental evaluation.

A malicious mischief citation was issued for the younger man, who was uncooperative and would not say whether he wanted to press charges against the other man.

House hit by gunfire

A house on South 170th Place and a resident’s vehicle outside were hit by gunfire on March 9.

A resident heard four gunshots outside his home at about 10:15 p.m., the fourth followed quickly by a loud thunk. He couldn’t find any damage. Two days later, he called police to report a bullet hole in his window. The bullet could have hit anyone standing by the window.

The bullet embedded several inches into a wall.

At the time of the gunfire, a neighbor saw an older model black sedan, with tinted windows, pass slowly in front of his house. He watched in case the occupants tried to break into parked vehicles. Instead, the sedan stopped in front of the victims’ home and someone on the driver’s side fired four times. He saw a muzzle flash and fell to the floor.

He saw the sedan drive westbound. He didn’t call police.

On March 11 a resident reported discovering a bullet hole in her husband’s Jeep. The round went through a speaker in the back cargo area and through a jacket and water bottle. It wasn’t found.

Foot chase leads to arrest

A 46-year-old Renton man with a felony warrant for second-degree theft led two officers on a foot chase at about 2 p.m. March 9 after a witness reported him drinking beer in public near Wells Avenue and North Riverside Drive.

The suspect was carrying a plastic bag full of cans and responded “yes” when asked whether they were beer cans. One can was open in clear view.

Officers allowed another man with him to leave, but the suspect bolted northbound on Wells Avenue near North First Street when the officer tried to handcuff him. The officer learned he had a felony warrant for second-degree theft.

A police commander joined the chase, catching up with the suspect as he tried to jump a fence. He was taken into custody. He was treated for a laceration to his hand at Valley Medical Center.

He was booked into the SCORE regional jail on the warrant and for obstructing an officer.

Woman arrested for huffing

A 50-year-old Seattle woman was arrested March 10 for “huffing” or inhaling gold paint behind a store on Rainier Avenue South.

Before finding her, an officer came across a 60-year-old Seattle man behind the store, drinking from an open 24-ounce can of Hurricane beer.

“You looking for the huffer?” he asked the officer. “She’s in the bushes.”

The officer spotted her with foil held to her face. The officer heard her sniff deeply, then she looked at the officer. Remnants of gold paint covered her mouth, nose, fingers and hands.

During a search, officers found an 11-ounce can of Rust-Oleum Bright Coat Finish Spray Paint.

She was booked into the SCORE regional jail for investigation of inhaling and possessing toxic fumes. The man was booked into SCORE on a warrant and for having an open container of alcohol.

Meth found on shoplifter

An out-of-work Seattle man, 48, who needed some money was arrested March 7 for trying to shoplift a $250 voice recorder from Fry’s Electronics on Garden Avenue.

He told a Renton Police officer he planned to sell the recorder on the street and not return it to the store for cash.

“This was just stupid. I just needed some money,” he told the officer.

After he was booked into the SCORE regional jail, personnel found a bag of methamphetamine in his shirt pocket. Tucked in his underwear was a white pill; he told the officer it was Vicodin because it had a V on it. His mother gave it to him so he could sleep.

The booking was amended to include investigation of drug possession.
