Mayor Denis Law has proposed $50,000 for an off-leash dog park in his 2009 city budget proposal, which totals $252 million.

If approved for funding, the park would be located at Narco, the former brick plant adjacent to the Cedar River and the Cedar River Trail that is now a 4 1/2-acre open field. The City of Renton owns the field.

The dog park would be a two-year project. Even if successful, the park could not remain at Narco long-term, because under a city master plan, that field will become soccer fields in about 2025.

The Parks Commission unanimously approved the project Oct. 14. The City Council’s Committee of the Whole was briefed on the dog park Oct. 27.

Even if City Council approves the $50,000 in mid-November, dog-park supporters would have to raise an additional $50,000 before the test park could be constructed.

The city created a Dog Park Task Force this spring after years of dog-park requests.
