Renton police have arrested a 31-year-old man in connection to an early morning shooting that injured two people on Feb. 27 at an encampment in Renton.

Investigators found the 31-year-old man shot at a tent with a firearm, striking two individuals. According to the department, the shooting occurred in an encampment near the Cedar River Dog Park around 2:30 a.m. Feb. 27.

According to the department, a 30-year-old victim suffered a gunshot wound to the upper torso, and a 20-year-old victim suffered a gunshot wound to the arm.

According to an email from Meeghan Black, a spokesperson for the police department, first responders transported the 30-year-old victim to Harborview Medical Center and the 20-year-old victim to Valley Medical Center.

Investigators initiated an active search for the suspect after one of the victims identified the suspect. Police arrested and placed the suspect in custody as of noon the same day, according to Black.

According to an email from Laura Pettitt, a spokesperson for the City of Renton, between November 2023 and December 2023, the city removed ten encampments along the Cedar River corridor.

“The suspect has a lengthy criminal history, and from what is currently known, this was a targeted act,” Pettitt stated in her email.
