Photos: Location change can’t keep these ice bears down

The 2024 Renton Polar Bear Plunge rings in New Year at the city aquatic center.

With an air temperature of 36 degrees and a water temperature of 46 degrees, hundreds braved the frigid pool waters of the Henry Moses Aquatic Center for the city’s annual Polar Bear Plunge.

Usually located on the shores of Lake Washington at Gene Coulon Memorial Beach Park, the event was moved to the aquatic center after a recent toxic algae bloom popped up in the lake.

This didn’t deter local wannabe Polar Bears as several groups took turns running into the cold waters of the pool right at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 1.

Along with the bold jump into the cold water, participants could enjoy raffles, photo opportunities, free hot cocoa and free clam chowder.
