‘Finger of God’ crew on way to the top

“Finger of God” won three curvees at Renton FilmFrenzy 2008. But that’s not enough for the makers of the short film. The trio wants to be TV stars.

With three webisodes, the crew is well on its way.

“Everybody is going to know about it. It’s going to be like a little subculture,” Sam Graydon says of the “Finger of God” series.

The series chronicles Sam and Bob’s adventures in Renton. Bob is Bob Anderson, who acts alongside Sam.

Graydon won best actor for his role in the first “Finger of God.” He and his crew also took best picture and first place in the Open (non-student) division in Renton FilmFrenzy, the city’s first 50-hour film contest, in October.

Since then, Graydon has directed and acted with Anderson in three more “Finger of God” webisodes. All but part four are on You Tube. Part four was unveiled at a viewing party on Wednesday.

In addition to filming the four webisodes, the crew — Graydon and Anderson and producer Ashley Russell — with help from camera and sound workers, has been shooting a sample commercial for the City of Renton. If well-received, the crew may film a series of shorts for the city’s Web site.

“We really want to start working with the city to help benefit one another,” Russell says.

The crew goes by the name Donkey Park Productions, named after the donkey sculpture in downtown’s Tonkin Park.

“The donkey kind of represents the spirit of Renton,” Graydon explains. “It’s kind of like the Space Needle of Renton.”

All three crew members have other jobs and film projects. But Finger of God gets top billing.

“There’s no such thing after ‘Finger of God,'” Anderson jokes.

So what is “Finger of God?”

“If I was pitching it to somebody, I would say it’s a cross between ‘Clerks,’ ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ and ‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,'” Graydon says.

Part one introduced Sam and Bob, two native Rentonians who bumble through the four-minute movie while extolling Renton’s virtues. Part two and three further develop the Sam and Bob characters and introduce additional characters and storylines. Part four shows the pair preparing for the Wednesday viewing party where that newest webisode debuted.

“The second one you get a little more character development, and by the third one you’ve pretty much caught on to who we are,” Graydon says of the webisodes.

“Sam has a crazy idea and Bob shakes his head and sighs, that’s how it works,” Graydon explains.

Russell says that’s pretty close to reality for the two 30-somethings, friends since seventh grade.

Snippets from some of the duo’s past conversations are included as dialogue in the “Finger of God” webisodes. But Anderson says the short films aren’t non-fiction.

“It’s not reality, and it is, if that makes sense,” he says.

The webisodes are also scripted, not improvised. Anderson and Graydon write the scripts. Russell produces and Seth Wessel-Estes operates the camera.

Sam and Bob are the main characters in each webisode, but Renton is, too. All the webisodes are shot entirely in Renton.

“Renton is kind of like the third character in the films, besides me and Bob,” Graydon says.

Still, Russell says “Finger of God” appeals to viewers outside Renton.

“People have been talking to me about how they feel the show relates to any small town, any city, any state,” Russell says. “It’s not necessarily Renton specific, although it is.”

A broad appeal could help make TV stars of the Donkey Park Productions crew. Eventually, the crew wants to convert “Finger of God” from webisodes into TV episodes.

“That’s the ultimate goal,” Graydon says.
