A Terrible Beauty offers full plate of St. Patrick’s Day fun

Local Irish pub A Terrible Beauty expects to be even busier than last year this St. Patrick’s Day March 17 due to the pub’s growth in popularity.

There is a full day of activities planned starting with brunch at 9 a.m. with musical acts all day long until 2 a.m.

Owner Jenna Shannon Garvey O’Brien said the pub and restaurant has grown in more ways than one.

They’ve gone from six employees to 33 in a year and a half. They went from 12 beers on tap when she and her husband Pat O’Brien bought the establishment to 28 and soon to have 30.

They’ve been open 19 months.

The pub, which has gone through different iterations under different management, has been restored to being a proper Irish pub, Shannon Garvey O’Brien said.

Not only does the decor reflect an Irish pub atmosphere with antique Guinness posters, photographs of Ireland and dark woods, but the feeling emanating from it suggests casual comfort and a friendly spirit.

“A proper Irish pub should be somewhere you can come and enjoy a pint by yourself, or hang out with your family and friends or come read a book quietly by yourself, or come by yourself and meet new people,” said Shannon Garvey O’Brien. “So, it’s really about a feeling of being able to walk in for the first time being treated like family. That’s a proper Irish pub.”

On St. Patrick’s Day the restaurant will have a limited menu of Irish fare. She calls the menu gourmet pub food without the gourmet prices.

Cover for the event is $10 before 3 p.m. and $20 after 3 p.m.
