I remain saddened by the horrible loss of life of a 12-year old boy in Skyway as does the entire Renton community. What could have been done to avoid this? Why doesn’t anybody speak up? Why are our neighborhoods full of drugs, gangs and crime? Why are we living in such a heartless, violent world where such incomprehensibly violent acts occur? We all are asking ourselves these questions and will be for a long time following such a horrific act of violence and loss of a truly innocent life.
Along with previous writers, I am deeply saddened by the death of Velda Mapelli on the Cedar River Trail as a result of an accident involving a bicyclist. I agree with most of the statements made, except one. Banning bicycles from the trail is not the answer. For every fast, inconsiderate cyclist, there are probably an equal number of safe cyclists and bicycling children.

Several years ago we got into modern bicycling, buying cruiser-type bikes with trail-bike features to handle our local conditions safely.
I offer the following which has served us well:
The aftershock of Velda Mapelli’s death has not lessened for those of us who frequent the Cedar River Trail. The planted azalea and white cross are not the only things that serve as a reminder of her tragic death. Every speeding bicyclist that fails to even acknowledge a pedestrian is a reminder and a warning that the problem of safety on the trail is something that has to be dealt with quickly.
The majority of cyclists don’t give any indication that they are there or are about to pass you and they are all going way faster then the posted limit. I am sickened by what happened and feel that bicycles should be banned from the Cedar River Trail in that area of high foot traffic.
People who live by the Lindbergh swimming pool and many who either have themselves or know someone who has used the pool are working to save this enclosed pool, which is one of two pools owned by Renton School District and located at local high schools. This pool is used by many users and is the only public recreation area in the Benson Hill area of Renton.
