    Renton senior Anthony Gold is the Seamount football Athlete of the Year.

    Gold also grabbed the Offensive Back of the Year award, Hazen’s Cody Moorhead won the Defensive Interior Player of the Year award, and Hazen coach Drew Oliver won the Coach of the Year award.

    The Liberty girls soccer team beat Everett 2-0 in the second round of the 3A state soccer tournament Saturday.

    The Patriots (17-1) advance to take on Eastside Catholic (12-6-5) in the quarterfinals Friday at 4 p.m. at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

    Lakewood got a helping hand from the weather in beating the Lindbergh football team 43-13 Friday night.

    The loss knocks Lindbergh (6-4) out of the 2A state playoffs. The game was played at Lakewood Stadium in Arlington, which features a grass field. Heavy rain made for muddy, slippery conditions – a factor that played against the Eagles’ speed advantage.

    Liberty freshman Mackenna Briggs won a state title in the 100 back Saturday as the Liberty and Hazen swimmers took on the rest of the competition around Washington at the 3A state swim and dive meet.

    Briggs, who earlier this year became the first freshman Liberty swimmer to ever qualify for state in every event, won the 100 back with a time in the finals of 58.62. She swam a time of 59.42 in the preliminary round, the only 3A swimmer to finish under one minute.

    On a goal from senior Cassidy Nangle with 20 minutes left, Liberty beat Columbia River 2-1 Wednesday night in the opening round of the 3A state tournament.

    After the win, the Patriots (16-1) considered themselves lucky to get away with the victory.

    With strong veterans like Elise Tinseth, and excellent newcomers like Mackenna Briggs, the Liberty swim and dive team heads into state looking good.

    Tinseth is no stranger to the state meet. Last year she placed sixth in the 100 breast and seventh in the 200 IM, while also swimming on the Patriots’ 200-medley and 400-free relay teams.

    Looking at Renton senior Lynhda Vuong before she takes on her event at a swim meet, there’s one word that seems to fit her best: intense.

    Sitting by herself, she’s focused completely on what’s ahead. And it’s working so far. Vuong will be taking on the rest of the state this weekend at the 2A state swim and dive meet, where she’ll swim in the 100 free and the 400-free relay.

    With a second-straight undefeated KingCo 3A/2A season, second-straight league championship and second-straight state berth, things couldn’t be much better for the Liberty girls soccer team.

    “I feel like the drive the girls have had this year and last year is completely on a different level,” said senior all-state forward and Oklahoma commit Cassidy Nangle. “Every girl here wants to win. You can just feel the energy.”

    Lindbergh scored 112 points, edging Sehome in second place with 113.

    The Liberty girls cross-country team placed eighth at the 3A state meet Nov. 5.

    Allie Wood led the way in 27th place. Sarah Bliesner (43rd), Megan Larson (44th), Megan Chucka (94th), Amy Broska (101st), Rachel Shaw (102nd) and Aimee Christensen (133rd) followed.

    The Hazen soccer team fell to Kelso 2-1 in a winner-to-state, loser-out district playoff game Nov. 5.

    The Highlanders (11-3-5) fell behind with 3:46 left in the first half when Kelso struck first. Hazen answered at the 32-minute mark in the second half when Gabby Brower nailed a long shot.

    The Hazen swim and dive team kept rolling, and won the West Central District 3A meet Nov. 4-5 at the Hazen pool.

    The Highlanders scored 235 points, outpacing second-place Peninsula with 198. Kennedy Catholic came in third at 194.

    The Hazen football team advanced to the 3A state tournament for the first time since 1993 with a 36-15 win against Franklin Nov. 5.

    “The win was huge,” said Hazen coach Drew Oliver. “This is where we stalled out for the past couple of years, so for the growth of the program, this was the natural step.”

    Lindbergh led the way for Renton schools at the West Central District 2A swim and dive meet Nov. 4-5 at the Hazen pool.

    The Eagles came in seventh with 77 points. Renton followed in 11th with 38 points.

    It was all working for the Lindbergh football team Friday night as the Eagles topped North Kitsap 38-17 to advance to the 2A state tournament for the third time in the past four years.

    “It’s a beautiful thing,” said Lindbergh coach Pat O’Grady. “We’ve kind of got it figured out. Hopefully it stays figured out.”

    The Lindbergh girls soccer team beat Franklin Pierce 3-0 in a sub-district playoff game, through driving wind and rain, Wednesday night.

    The Eagles (12-5) advance to the district tournament and play North Kitsap (9-1-5) Saturday at 1 p.m. at North Kitsap High School with a trip to the state tournament up for grabs.

    Hazen’s Kayla DiMicco is anomaly. The sophomore has qualified for the 3A state meet in four swimming events, and diving, putting her in rare air.

    “I’m confident there’s no one in state who’s qualified for diving and an individual event one time,” said Hazen coach Rick Wertman. “To do it four times, it shows the quality of athlete she is.”

    That’s how Lindbergh girls soccer coach James Valles described the Eagles’ approach to the postseason. Having already locked up the first Seamount championship anyone at the school can remember, and a big win over rival Kennedy Catholic, anything beyond this is icing on the cake.
