A Renton man who is a 15-time convicted felon was arrested after he rammed police with a stolen Porsche, and police subsequently found a firearm and methamphetamine in the vehicle.
On Dec. 8, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Ryan William Cox, 40, of Renton, with first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen vehicle and second-degree malicious mischief. According to charging documents, these charges stem from a Dec. 3 Seattle incident where Cox was found slumped over inside a stolen Porsche, and Cox then proceeded to ram a police vehicle.
According to documents, on Dec. 11, Cox pleaded not guilty to his charges. Cox remains at the Maleng Regional Justice Center on a $250,000 bail.
Details of the case
According to charging documents, at 12:25 p.m. Dec. 3 Seattle police received a call about a male slumped over unconscious in his vehicle. Upon arrival, officers found the man inside a Porsche, and the car next to it had its door open.
After finding that the Porsche lacked a license plate, the officer suspected that the person inside, later identified as Cox, may be in possession of a stolen vehicle and was in the process of committing vehicle prowls. Documents state that the officers further believed that the Porsche may have been stolen because the VIN was covered by quarters.
Officers then parked a vehicle in front of the Porsche and initiated verbal contact with Cox through an amplified public address system. Documents state that for more than two minutes, officers repeatedly commanded Cox to exit the vehicle and raise his hands, but he failed to do so and instead kept reaching around the vehicle.
At about 12:41 p.m., Cox accelerated in the Porsche toward the police vehicle blocking him from exiting the parking space and struck the police vehicle. The force of the strike moved the police vehicle three to five feet. For over one minute, Cox refused commands by officers and drove back and forth. At 12:43 p.m., Cox then struck the police vehicle again.
Officers noted that it appeared Cox might have had difficulty operating the vehicle due to impairment or because the vehicle had a manual transmission. In the video of the incident, the vehicle’s engine is heard revving while the vehicle remains still.
After Cox struck the police vehicle for the second time, officers removed him from the car. Documents state that while removing Cox from the car, an officer sustained a cut and had blood exposure.
Documents state that officers then arrested Cox and found a stolen firearm inside the Porsche. Officers further located 1.9 grams of methamphetamine and 7.9 grams of marijuana.
Officers found that Cox’s criminal history included 15 felonies, and 14 of the felonies were related to theft or possession of stolen property, and one was an attempt to elude. He also had seven gross misdemeanors on his record.
