Renton airport unveils new administration office

The Renton Municipal Airport is celebrating its 100th anniversary with the opening of a new administration office and other major upgrades.

The Renton city staff and leadership joined the Renton airport community recently to celebrate the completion of the airport’s new administrative offices and upgrades. The administrative space for the airport was moved from the control tower to a “new, inviting, and functional environment.” The city said the move will enhance the experience for both employees and visitors.

The new office is located on the airport’s southwest corner. The city said it is a part of a larger strategy to protect and modernize critical infrastructure for Renton’s future.

Renton Municipal Airport, also known as Clayton Scott Field, was founded 100 years ago and supports nearly 140,000 operations annually, representing approximately 20% of Washington state’s total general aviation activities, the city said.

“It can’t be overstated the importance aviation has played to the development of our region, and it will continue to in the future,” Renton Mayor Armondo Pavone said.

Other projects the city has invested in to enhance the airport operations and public access include the repaving of Taxiway Alpha and the expansion of parking facilities. Ongoing upgrades and improvements will continue through summer 2027. City staff has secured grants totaling $18 million in federal funding to underwrite these improvements.

Earlier this year, Renton Airport Director Manny Cruz said Taxiway Alpha is the main taxiway for Boeing’s 737 factory. Cruz said the taxiway has not been replaced in more than 20 years.

“It’s holding up okay, but pavement deteriorates pretty quickly, so we want to make sure that we build infrastructure that’s going to last and keep the airport available to the public,” Cruz said.

Cruz previously said the project will take two years to complete and will be done in phases to allow a portion of the taxiway to remain open and not disrupt business.

The parking lot project is looking to rehabilitate two aircraft parking aprons and one car parking lot. The city contracted Westwater Construction Co. for the project earlier in April 2025 for a cost of $2,404,287.41.

The city of Renton is also committed to further expansion at the airport by adding EV charging stations for aircraft and vehicles, investments in a new control tower and enhancements to the seaplane base.

The city recently approved a $118,335.70 reimbursement with the FAA for the siting services of the new air traffic control tower, paid for by an FAA Airport Improvement Grant. The anticipated completion for the tower is 2031 or 2032.
