North Renton Neighborhood Association hosts candidate forum

Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the event will run 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 14.

The North Renton Neighborhood Association is holding a candidate forum for Renton residents to hear from city council candidates.

The Renton City Council candidates will be given a chance to answer a variety of questions on local issues at the Carco Theatre on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The event will be free and open to everyone. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the event will run 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

“Our organization is really passionate about engagement and making sure our neighbors feel heard,” Social Committee Chair Dominic Williams said. “We’ve had experiences where we feel that our neighbors haven’t always been appreciated so we are putting this on so our community and anyone who wants to come has a chance to ask questions of their future elected representatives and make an informed vote.”

Williams said the neighborhood association wants to inform voters on their candidates, but does not endorse any candidates and are non-partisan.

Three city council positions are in contention this election season. Incumbent James Alberson is running against Michael Westgaard for position 1. Incumbent Carmen Rivera is running against Mary Clymer for position 2. Incumbent Ruth Pérez is running against Paul Dutton for position 6. All of these candidates are expected to be speaking at the forum.

Williams said King County Council District 5 candidate Stephanie Fain will also be answering questions at the event. Her opposition, Peter Kwon, will be sending a video of himself answering the same questions as Fain due to his obligations as a councilmember for the city of SeaTac.

Community members have the opportunity to submit their questions for the candidates through an online registration and RSVP. The questions will be given to candidates beforehand.

Williams said the first half of the event will be “quick fire questions” of one-minute answers and the second half will give candidates two minutes to respond to more open-ended questions.

The Carco Theatre is located at 1717 Maple Valley Highway in Renton.
