Drivers on southbound I-405 will have to take a detour this weekend due to a closure near Renton.
The southbound I-405 closure will be from N. Southport Drive/ Sunset Boulevard NE to State Route 167 starting at 11:59 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, and lasting until 4 a.m. Monday, Sept. 29.
Crews will be excavating drainage crossings, installing median drainage, completing full pavement replacements and completing a traffic switch on southbound I-405.
Several on- and off-ramps will be closed due to the construction: southbound SR 169/SR900 on-ramp, southbound off-ramp to SR 515/Talbot Road S. (Exit 3), southbound off-ramp to southbound SR 167/Auburn/Ranier Avenue S. (Exit 2) and direct connector ramp to SR 167. The off-ramp to SR 169/SR 900 (Exit 4) will remain open.
The detour will take drivers on Sunset Boulevard NE/Southport Drive off-ramp (exit 5) to Main Avenue S. and S. Grady Way to rejoin southbound I-405.
Crews will be using light panels to illuminate their work at night. They will also use strategies to minimize noise and disruptions to nearby properties such as avoiding banging truck tailgates, directing lights away from homes and using ambient sensitive backup warning devices. WSDOT can provide ear plugs and white noise machines upon request.
The closure is due to the I-405/Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes project, which will add new capacity between SR 167 in Renton and Northeast Sixth Street in Bellevue. One new lane will be added in each direction and combine the existing HOV lane with the new lane to create a dual ETL system.
The new ETLs will connect to the existing express toll lane system between Bellevue and Lynnwood, as well as the SR 167 HOT lanes via the I-405/SR 167 Interchange Direct Connector, to create a 40-mile ETL system.
