Fire risk high, especially with potential for lightning tonight

It’s been nearly three weeks since we’ve seen any measurable rain in the area and with hot, dry conditions all around, fuel for potential fires is everywhere.
Throw in the possibility of lightning tonight and the Renton Fire Department is warning resident to be on guard for the possibilities of fire.
“The fuel conditions are ripe for that kind of activity,” said Deuty Fire Chief Erik Walgren.
According to Walgren, the downside to the run of great weather we’ve had recently has been a “not-uncommon” increase in brush fires. Walgren said the department has responded to about 50 brush fires in the past three weeks.
Walgren said many of the fires are caused by cigarettes, or this month fireworks, but the long dry spell has created conditions that could prove problematic if there are lightning strikes tonight.
Walgren said resident are advised to remove dry vegetation from the sides of structures. The dry weeds can catch fire , which can spread easily to the house.
Walgren said it was not just good housekeeping, but could limit your house’s fire potential.
