Sweet slumber at Safeway | POLICE BLOTTER

This week’s blotter includes a sleeping Safeway suspect, a pepper spraying incident, and more.

The following information was compiled from Renton Police Department’s incident reports.

Police were contacted on May 24 by the Safeway on Northeast Fourth Street regarding a woman who was reportedly sleeping in the women’s bathroom.

An officer arrived on scene and entered the restroom to hear a woman snoring in the handicap stall. The officer knocked on the door and ordered the woman to come out. She continued to snore, but eventually woke up. The officer told her she needed to leave, but she was uncooperative and did not comply to the officer’s multiple warnings.

When the officer said she could be arrested for criminal trespass, she left the store but stopped at the main entrance. She turned around and said she was not from around here and that police could not kick her out onto the streets.

The officer warned her again about her arrest, and the suspect continued to stand her ground. She was then arrested and transported to the SCORE Jail for second-degree trespass.

Pepper spray for a backpack: Police responded to a report of a woman being pepper sprayed on May 22 at the intersection of South Third Street and Mill Avenue South.

When police arrived on scene, they found the victim standing at a water fountain, running her face with water. She appeared to be in pain, the report stated.

According to the victim, she was pepper sprayed in a nearby parking lot by a female suspect who was in the back of a white box van. She said the suspect stole her backpack from her cousin’s house a few weeks ago, and that they had been going back and forth about the backpack for the past few weeks. The victim said she ran into the suspect at the parking lot, then confronted her about the issue. The suspect then sprayed her in the face and left.

Firefighters were called on scene to help flush the pepper spray out the victim’s eyes. She was transported to Valley Medical Center since she was homeless and was unable to open her eyes.

There is no further information on this case.

Making good money: Police responded to a report about shoplifting on May 25 at Fry’s Electronics on Garden Avenue North.

The suspect was a 25 year old male who was caught stealing a box of Bose headphones (estimated value of $199) and removing the security wrapping. He concealed the item in his pocket and attempted to walk out of the store when he was caught by security.

The officer placed the suspect under arrest for third-degree theft. The suspect said he “did not know what came over him” and admitted to being wrong. He then said he had money to pay for the item and that he “makes good money for someone his age.”

The security guard told him it was too late for that and that criminal charges were already requested.

The suspect was released upon a condition that he would appear in court if subpoenaed.

Punching the security guard: A man punched a security guard at Valley Medical Center emergency room on May 23.

According to the security guard, he was punched in the nose while he was escorting the suspect out of the emergency room. The suspect had been discharged and refused to leave. The security guard was called to escort him off the property when the altercation occurred.

The suspect was placed under arrest for fourth-degree assault. He said he blacked out and that he did not remember punching anybody.

He was booked into the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines.
