The closure of State Route 520 over Lake Washington  for construction work this weekend will increase traffic on detours, including Interstate 90 over the lake and on Interstate 405 around the lake in Renton, according to the state transportation department.

SR 520 is closed from Montlake Boulevard in Seattle to I-405 on the Eastside. The heaviest traffic is expected through about 8 p.m. Saturday. At mid-day, state traffic cameras were showing heavy traffic on I-90 over the lake.

SR 520 will reopen at 5 a.m. Monday.

The I-5 ramps to Mercer Street also are scheduled to be closed until 5 a.m. Monday morning.

There are several regional events and Mariners’ games this weekend, and drivers should consider alternate routes and allow extra time to reach their destination.  More  information about travel conditions is available at the state transportation  department’s  What’s Happening Now website.

  •  The I-90 express lanes will be open westbound from 8 a.m. Saturday, June 18, to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 19. They will operate eastbound after 3 p.m.
  • The I-5 express lanes will be open southbound from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 18, and then switch to northbound from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.
  • The I-5 express lanes will be open on a normal schedule on Sunday, June 19: southbound from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. and northbound from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Key alternate routes for drivers heading into Seattle from the south end include SR 509, SR 599, East Marginal Way South, Airport Way South and Fourth Avenue South.

The Eastside Transit and HOV Project will widen SR 520 to six lanes from Medina to Bellevue. The project includes rebuilding interchanges, installing fish-passable culverts, and building highway lids and transit stops in the center of the highway. WSDOT awarded the $306 million design-build contract to Eastside Corridor Constructors (ECC), a joint venture of Granite Construction Company and PCL Construction Services.
