Renton High Centennial Committee looking for Walls of Fame nominees

The legends of Renton High School’s past will have a new perch come next May. That’s when the Friends of Renton High School hope to unveil their Centennial Walls of Honor.
The all-volunteer, community-based non-profit organization is now accepting nominations for the wall. Anyone can nominate individuals to the two categories Distinguished Almuni and Athletic Hall of Fame, which seek to recognize Renton High School graduates who have succeed personally and professionally.
“Renton High School has a long legacy of excellence and this is a way to honor some of Renton High School’s most distinguished alumni,” said Terri Briere, Centennial co-chair in a press release. “It is an eloquent display of the pride we hold in the accomplishments of Renton High School graduates.”
The Distinguished Alumni Award will be given to graduates who have distinguished themselves in business and the community, but that community work doesn’t necessarily have to be in Renton. Awards will also be given posthumously to recognize people in the past 100 years. The Athletic Hall of Fame honors individuals who have performed at the highest levels in high school as well as in collegiate, Olympic, or professional competition. It will honor coaches, administrators, and other contributors to the success of the athletic programs. Alumni who graduated 10 or more years ago or Renton faculty or staff who coached for a minimum of eight years are eligible.
One candidate likely to make the list is Henry Moses, said Briere. He was a Renton High School basketball legend and a Duwamish Indian chief. He is also the inspiration for the school’s team mascot.
Briere hopes the nomination process will uncover some names the committee isn’t familiar with. Inductees will be announced prior to the May 7, 2011, Centennial Celebration.
Nomination forms can be downloaded at www.CelebrateRentonHigh.org. Additional documents may be attached to the nomination form, but they must all be received March 1, 2011 for a 2011 award. Nominations can be mailed to Centennial Walls of Honor, c/o Friends of Renton High School, P.O. Box 4011, Renton, WA 98057.
