Renton Fire crews wear pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Members of the Renton Fire and Emergency Services Department added a new color to their uniform this week – pink – in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The program is voluntary, but the majority of the department’s personnel wore pink shirts instead of the usual navy through Thursday. Proceeds from the t-shirt sales, purchased by the participating members, benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
This is the first year Renton Fire and Emergency Services has participated in this campaign.
The Renton Fire Benevolent Association worked with many other departments around the Puget Sound to design the t-shirts.
Cancer has affected many within the Renton Fire & Emergency Services Department. Many studies have shown that firefighters are more likely to develop testicular cancer and have a significantly higher rate of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and prostate cancer than people in other professions.
