Volleyball: Eagles well-rounded and ready for charge into postseason

Things are rarely this simple. But with the Lindbergh volleyball team success this year depends on one thing: developing consistent offensive threats.
“If we go on it’s going to be because some of these guys start figuring out where the court is,” said Lindbergh coach Bob Stewart. “Right now they’ll get 10 kills and make 10 errors. When we get to the point where they make 12 kills and five errors we’ll start beating teams. Whether that happens this week or next week I don’t know.”
Lindbergh had no seniors on the varsity roster last season, so the team welcomes back a lot of talent. The veteran group starts with senior Kaylee Magat. Magat plays libero for Lindbergh, meaning she will handle the opposing team’s serves. Outside hitters Erin White and Kristin Huffman will be essential to Lindbergh’s offensive development. White earned second team all-league mention last year.
Breaunah Jacobs and Melissa Peltier provide size in the middle. Both are seniors and both stand 5-foot-8.
Talented newcomers include freshman Shayna Magat (Kaylee’s sister) and sophomore Tianna Banfro.
Magat is starting at setter for the team while Branfro is starting at middle blocker.
“Some of the new kids have stepped up and put pressure on the older kids,” Stewart said.
After starting the year with three non-league losses, Lindbergh has bounced back to 5-4 and 3-1 in league play. The Eagles have won four straight after a 3-1 victory against Hazen Oct. 6.
They now stand tied for third place in the Seamount with Mount Rainier. Lindbergh plays the Rams tonight.
Playoffs
Each Seamount teams faces every other Seamount team once during regular-season league play. That ends Oct. 20 when Lindbergh faces Evergreen, Renton plays Highline and Hazen plays Tyee.
Teams are then seeded by their league record into the Seamount tournament (Oct. 26-27 at Mount Rainier). The top five teams from the Seamount tournament move on to the Seamount/SPSL 3A subdistrict tournament. Ten teams go into that tournament, eight come out and head to districts.
